Lane of Kansas ...On August 4, 1862 Senator James H. Lane of Kansas authorized the recruitment of men of African descent to fill an infantry regiment for the Union Army. Additionally, by authorizing the procurement of supplies from Ordnance, Quartermaster and Commissary the recruits were uniformed, armed and supplied for training at Leavenworth, Kansas. A request was made to muster the regiment into the U. S. Army. However, the request was conditionally denied. On January 13, 1863 the regiment was mustered into the U. S. service as the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry.<br />On October 26 - 27, 1862 a detachment of 240 men of the 1st was moved from Fort Lincoln, KS and established a camp south west of Butler, Missouri. On the 29th the Skirmish at Island Mound, Missouri was fought when the detachment was attacked by a force of 500 rebels. The engagement resulted in the defeat of the rebels at a considerable loss to the rebels. This was the first engagement of colored troops against Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi.<br />On July 1 – 2, 1863 the 1st Kansas Colored , 2nd Colorado Infantry , detachments of the 6th and 9th Kansas Cavalry, one section of the 2nd Kansas Battery, and an Indian Brigade fought the First Battle of Cabin Creek, IT. This was the first time white and colored troops fought side-by-side in the Trans-Mississippi.<br />On the morning of July 17, 1863 the Battle of Honey Springs, IT was fought between 3,000 Union troops commanded by Major General James G. Blunt and a 6,000 Confederate force under the command of Brigadier General Douglas H. Cooper. The Confederates were defeated and forced to abandon the field. During the engagement the 1st. Kansas Colored marched to within 40 to 50 paces of that portion of the line held by the 29th and 30th Texas Regiments and a rebel battery before pouring a well-directed volley of fire into the rebel line. The volleys of fire caused the line in front of the 1st. Kansas Colored to collapse and retreat from the field. This was the first time colored troops held the center of a Union line.<br />The 1st. Kansas Colored Regiment (renamed the 79th Regiment of Infantry U. S.
